Sir Alex Ferguson was definitely capable of emotional empathy and actually handled a hell of a lot of situations by being the person a helluva lot of people didn't want to see rather than simply morphing into a person people wanted to see.
How do you think he brought Eric Cantona back to the Utd fold post Kung Fu kick without emotional empathy? Or handled Roy Keane's departure from the 2002 WC? Or handled the Beckham/France '98 debacle? In the case of the first one at least his actions went against the grain of a press and public looking to crucify Cantona as well. He managed that situation by going against what everyone (including Cantona himself) initially wanted to see happen.
