Red Sox Announce Tanner Houck Will Undergo Tommy John Surgery

Boston Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck is finally putting his horrific season in the rearview.

It’s not exactly under great circumstances, though.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced the veteran right-hander will undergo Tommy John surgery during his media availability before Saturday afternoon’s matchup with the Houston Astros. Boston has not determined when the surgery will take place, but it is happening.

“We don’t have a date yet but he’s going to have (the surgery), Cora said, per MassLive’s Christopher Smith.

Houck, 29, struggled in nine starts this season, posting an 8.04 ERA before landing on the injured list on May 14. The Red Sox then transferred him from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL on Thursday to make room for trade addition Dustin May.

Houck clearly hadn’t been the same pitcher since taking part in the 2024 MLB All-Star Game, giving up 68 earned runs in 105 1/3 innings pitched — which isn’t very good at all. You could see he wasn’t right physically, with the hope being that a season-ending surgery — which will significantly cut into next season — can help get him back on track.
