Tottenham target thinks this is his last opportunity to join a Champions League club
Journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed what Yoane Wissa is expected to do after Tottenham Hotspur signalled an interest in signing him this summer.
While a number of reports backed Tottenham to press ahead with a move for Wissa earlier this month, the rumours linking the 28-year-old with a move to N7 have gone quiet over the last weeks.
Plenty of outlets are now reporting that Newcastle United are stepping up their interest in Wissa, while some sources have indicated that Wissa is no longer seen as a priority by Spurs.
In fact, earlier this week, Newcastle even reportedly had a £25m bid for Wissa rejected by Brentford, and now, we have heard what the DR Congo international is thinking about his future.
Yoane Wissa has informed Brentford that he wants to leave
Ben Jacobs has now revealed that the centre-forward is keen on tasting Champions League football next season and believes that opportunity may never come again if he does not make a switch to either Newcastle or Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
The former Lorient man does not plan on going on strike, but he has informed his employers that he wants a new challenge.
Jacobs said on the Market Madness podcast: “So Wissa has made it clear to Brentford he wants to leave. Brentford want Wissa to sign a new deal. So there is a big gulf in each side’s position.
“But instead of agitating for a move or going on strike like Gyokeres did, Wissa has to speak to the Brentford hierarchy.
“And my understanding is that he will say very clearly that he would like to leave because he feels at his age, this is his last opportunity to go and play Champions League football. And both Spurs and Newcastle have that and can offer it to him imminently.”
Wissa prefers a Tottenham move over Newcastle
According to various updates over the past week, Wissa is expected to favour a move to Spurs ahead of Newcastle if both clubs make offers.
However, that does not mean he will turn down a move to the Magpies, with Greame Bailey revealing on Wednesday that Wissa is also in favour of a switch to St James’ Park.
It thus appears that the ball is very much in Tottenham’s court, and it will be interesting to see if Thomas Frank’s men rekindle their interest in the Brentford star.
