Former Red Sox Fan Favorite Reflects On Time In Boston

Kyle Schwarber’s time in Boston was brief but memorable. The lefty joined the Boston Red Sox at the 2021 trade deadline and played in 41 regular-season games. In that short stint, he hit .291 with seven home runs.

He quickly became a fan favorite and was given the humorous nickname, “Kyle from Waltham,” by the Section 10 Podcast due to his nondescript appearance. Despite only spending three months with the Red Sox, Schwarber said the nickname follows him to this day.

“Just being around, playing different places, you’ll hear it get shouted from the stands,” Schwarber said on the 310 To Left Podcast. “Every day it seems like. We could be anywhere, and you’ll hear ‘Kyle from Waltham'”.

Schwarber joined the Philadelphia Phillies after the 2021 season, but left Red Sox fans with memories. His grand slam in ALCS game three against the Houston Astros sent Fenway Park into a frenzy. He mocked himself when he tossed a ball to Nathan Eovaldi for an out after airmailing a similar opportunity earlier in the game in the ALDS.

In the postseason, Schwarber only hit .205 with Boston, but he hit three meaningful home runs. He’s played in the postseason in each of his three seasons with Philadelphia, hitting 12 home runs.

Schwarber is a free agent after the season. Red Sox manager Alex Cora is reportedly “very intrigued” by where Schwarber will end up. He told Alex Speier that the opportunity to play in the playoffs year after year was at the top of his list of priorities after the 2021 season. Schwarber shied away from questions about his future, but it’s likely postseason play will continue to play a factor in his recruiting.
