MLS commissioner raises concerns over Lionel Messi’s absence and proposes All‑Star Game fixes

Inter Miami's demanding calendar in the first half of the year forced the club and the league to manage Messi’s workload, prioritizing recovery over exhibition.

Major League Soccer (MLS) Commissioner Don Garber addressed the controversy surrounding Lionel Messi’s absence from the 2025 MLS All-Star Game, which took place at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas.

Despite the excitement around the star-studded event, where the MLS team defeated Liga MX 3-1, many fans were disappointed that Messi didn’t take the field. Garber, however, was quick to explain the league’s reasoning behind the decision.

“We have an All-Star Game that we believe is a true priority,” Garber stated during a press conference following the match. “But we also have a player who has played nine matches in just 30 days. Inter Miami has had a very different schedule from every other team. Leo played 90 minutes in every one of those games. We need to manage that as a league.”

Messi’s packed calendar included competitions across three fronts: the MLS regular season, the Concacaf Champions Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup. His relentless performance throughout these tournaments has taken a toll on his physical condition.

Although not officially injured, Messi and Inter Miami’s technical staff agreed it was best for the Argentine to rest during the All-Star break and avoid further risk of fatigue or injury heading into the second half of the season.

In 2025 so far, Messi has played 29 matches, totaling 2,481 minutes on the pitch. His performance remains stellar: 24 goals and 8 assists across 18 MLS games, 4 Club World Cup appearances, and 7 matches in the Concachampions. His ability to remain a dominant force at 38 years old has impressed fans and analysts alike, but the accumulation of minutes left the coaching staff little choice.

Garber acknowledged the disappointment of fans who traveled to see Messi play, but emphasized the long-term value of ensuring player health, especially for high-profile stars. “We understand the expectations. But keeping players healthy, especially someone like Leo who has such global impact, is a priority,” he said.

As Inter Miami gears up for key upcoming matches in both the MLS and the Leagues Cup, Messi’s absence from the All-Star Game underscores the challenges of managing elite athletes through a demanding season. For Garber and the MLS, it’s a balancing act between promoting the league’s marquee events and protecting the longevity of its biggest star.
