Former Red Sox World Series Champion Signs With NL Team
Veteran catcher Sandy Leon hasn’t played in an MLB game since 2023.
But Leon could soon end his two-year drought, as the former Boston Red Sox backstop was called up to the Atlanta Braves on Monday.
“The #Braves today selected C Sandy León to the major league roster, and designated OF Stuart Fairchild for assignment,” the team’s official X account posted on Monday morning.
The 36-year-old made his big-league debut with the Washington Nationals in May 2012 and spent the first three years of his career in the nation’s capital, playing just 34 games. Leon joined the Red Sox in March 2015 and suited up in 41 contests that season before splitting catching duties with Christian Vazquez from 2016-18.
The duo helped Boston win the World Series championship in 2018, with Leon going 3-for-6 across three games in the Fall Classic and providing solid defense.
Leon was traded after the 2019 campaign and has become a journeyman since, playing sparingly for Cleveland during two different stints, as well as the Miami Marlins, Minnesota Twins and most recently, the Texas Rangers.
