Patriots’ ‘Biggest Weakness’ Probably Won’t Be Much Of Surprise

The New England Patriots wide receiver group seems to be better than it was, but there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

Experts have acknowledged just that during the lead up to the 2025 season.

While ranking all 32 rosters in the NFL, ESPN labeled New England’s wide receiver group as the team’s “biggest weakness.” The Patriots ranked 21st in regards to overall roster.

“The much-improved Patriots are fairly balanced, which made this harder than expected,” NFL analyst Mike Clay wrote in the story published Monday. “The Patriots upgraded their receivers, but questions remain. Stefon Diggs was one of the league’s best receivers in his prime, but he’s 31 years old and recovering from last year’s torn ACL. DeMario Douglas is a solid slot man, but he’s undersized and limited to short-range work. Kendrick Bourne and Mack Hollins are serviceable, but the team still hopes for a breakout from youngsters Kyle Williams, Ja’Lynn Polk, Kayshon Boutte and/or Javon Baker.”

ESPN’s sentiments surfaced after Pro Football Focus ranked every wide receiver room in the league, a ranking where the Patriots finished 31st out of 32 teams.

Patriots pass-catchers will try to make those experts eat their words this season. Their first opportunity to do so is at training camp at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday.
