Amorim looks set to unleash 17yo academy star in a new role

0 9

Manchester United are set to play a friendly game against Leeds United in Stockholm on Saturday.

Despite making one notable addition, Matheus Cunha, to the squad, expectations for manager Ruben Amorim will be high.

Eyes will be not only on the performance of the team but also on the development of young starlets under his guidance.

Bendito Mantato is one of the most promising youngsters at Carrington.

The Athletic have revealed that Mantato has featured prominently in sessions, mainly at wing-back.

Shea Lacey, Elyh Harrison and Sekou Kone have also trained with the senior squad ahead of the trip to the United States.

Mantato is only 17, but he has already earned plaudits for his superb performances.

The teenager is predominantly a winger but it looks like his future could be at wing-back under Amorim.

The Portuguese head coach used Geovany Quenda in the right wing-back position at Sporting Lisbon due to his fine attacking credentials and tenacity in defending.

This decision proved to be a masterstroke, and Amorim could replicate it at Old Trafford.

Quenda is now playing as a left winger and will bolster the attacking ranks at Chelsea next summer.

Mantato was rewarded with his professional contract at United in May.

His style is very similar to that of Arsenal star Bukayo Saka.

He likes to take on defenders and cut inside to create chances or to find a suitable angle to shoot.

Despite suffering injuries, he impressed with his attacking exploits last season.

Netting 10 goals and registering four assists in 20 games shows he will bring directness and urgency to the side if Amorim deploys him in the right wing-back position.

He will have to compete with Amad Diallo and Diogo Dalot to earn minutes and show Old Trafford why he is rated so highly in the academy.
