Red Sox Trade Rumors: Twins Will Listen To Calls On Top Target
It’s time to pump the brakes a bit on those trade rumors linking the Boston Red Sox to Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan.
Twins president Derek Falvey appeared on the New York Post podcast “The Show” on Tuesday with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman. The reporters asked Falvey about the Twins becoming sellers ahead of the July 31 trade deadline.
“Our job is to listen to everything,” Falvey said. “The goal is to make the Minnesota Twins better, right? And ultimately, whether that means short term, long term, depends on where you are sometimes at the deadline.
“So it’s never about how we feel about them. We love every player we have in the clubhouse. We love every guy we’ve added, whether it’s the guys we just added this year or guys we’ve had for a long time,” Falvey continued.
“But rumors we can’t control and conversations we have to have,” Falvey added. “Many times those conversations about some of the players you’re talking about, even if you don’t agree that that’s the player you’re going to trade, it may spill off into a subsequent conversation that could really help you in a different way.
“So I think we need to stay open to creativity, think about all the players that are on our roster and then try and make the best decisions we can going into the deadline to try and put ourselves in the best spot, whether it’s for this year, but certainly for this year and beyond,” Falvey said.
The Twins (47-49) are in second place in the American League Central, 11 1/2 games behind the first-place Detroit Tigers. Minnesota is four games back in the AL Wild Card standings.
The Red Sox could use Ryan to upgrade their rotation for the stretch run. Boston All-Stars Garrett Crochet and Alex Bregman were seen interacting (recruiting?) the right-hander at the 2025 All-Star Game.
Ryan addressed the trade rumors during All-Star media availability.
“It’s fun for me. July is awesome,” Ryan told WEEI’s Rob Bradford. “I think everyone in the clubhouse gets excited seeing where guys are gonna go around the league. Being someone who could get traded, it would be exciting. I do love Minnesota, and I love where I’m at, so it would be sad and hard to go, but at the end of the day, it’s never up to me.”
However the Twins appear to be taking their time.
“The Minnesota Twins have yet to have conversations with other teams about right-hander Joe Ryan and at 47-49, have not had any conversations about selling, sources say,” FanSided’s Robert Murray reported Monday.
Ryan, 29, is 9-4 with a 2.72 ERA in 19 games (18 starts) this season. He’s making $3 million this season and has two more years of arbitration eligibility remaining, according to Spotrac.
