MLB Rumors: Red Sox Trading For Former Cy Young Winner Looks Unlikely
If the Boston Red Sox want to trade for a starting pitcher, there’s a pretty good one on the market in Miami. Well, he used to be pretty good, anyway.
The Marlins have been trying to shop ace Sandy Alcantara, who’s in the midst of his worst season as a big leaguer. His numbers at the All-Star break are dreadful: an unsightly 4-9 record with an astoundingly high 7.22 ERA in 18 starts.
His most recent stinker came Wednesday in Miami’s 7-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. In the game, Alcantara pitched five innings, giving up six earned runs on nine hits and two walks. It was his third straight start in which he gave up at least five earned runs.
“Miami Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara may not be traded if he continues to struggle,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported Sunday.
Those struggles include allowing 19 earned runs in the last 18 innings for a 9.50 ERA, per Nightengale.
CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson noted last week the 29-year-old right-hander, who won the National League Cy Young Award in 2022, hasn’t been the same since having Tommy John surgery in 2023.
As a result, Masslive.com’s Sean McAdam reported Friday the Red Sox haven’t checked in with the Marlins on Alcantara ahead of the July 31 MLB trade deadline.
But it’s possible that changes following Hunter Dobbins’ season-ending torn ACL.
According to Spotrac, Alcantara is making $17.3 million this season and will be on the books for the same amount next year. In 2027, he’s slated to make $21 million but the deal includes a club option with a $2 million buyout.
