Man United 'offered' a chance to sign 145-goal PL legend after Gyokeres snub

0 9

Manchester United are hitting roadblocks in their hunt for a marquee striker this summer.

They had prioritised a move for Liam Delap, but the youngster opted to join Chelsea. Viktor Gyokeres was another high-profile name on their shortlist, but the Swedish forward appears Arsenal-bound.

The allure of UEFA Champions League football proved decisive in his choice to reject United’s advances.

Napoli’s Victor Osimhen is also available on the market but he has reportedly agreed to a permanent switch to Turkish giants Galatasaray.

According to The Athletic, United have also been offered the chance to sign several free agents, namely Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Jamie Vardy and Callum Wilson.

If INEOS fail to sign an elite centre-forward, they may look for a short-term solution.

Due to injuries and inconsistent form, Calvert-Lewin has scored merely 12 Premier League goals over the last three seasons.

The 28-year-old last started a league game in January before a hamstring derailed the latter half of his campaign.

He simply does not offer the reliability or sharpness required to be even a temporary option in Amorim’s high-pressing system.

Wilson enjoyed a fantastic 2022-23 season in which he scored 18 goals and helped Newcastle finish fourth in the league.

However, injury concerns have haunted him in the last two campaigns, casting serious doubt on his ability to thrive under physically demanding tactics.

Jamie Vardy is an interesting choice. The 38-year-old is a Premier League legend, having netted 145 goals in 342 appearances.

Though his legs may not carry the same fire as they did a decade ago, his killer instinct could still make him a valuable impact sub in the dying moments of tight games.

He is edging closer to a move to Rangers and it will be interesting to see if he waits for United to set the transfer ball rolling.
