Brayan Bello Credits Others For His Stellar Outing
Through the first two months of the season, every outing was a battle for Brayan Bello. He completed five innings in just three of his first eight starts in 2025, putting tremendous pressure on the Boston Red Sox bullpen.
When the calendar turned to June, however, Bello flipped a switch. About midway through the month, he added a cutter that he’s used to fill up the strike zone, and been an incredibly effective pitcher ever since.
Since June 1, Bello has a 2.77 ERA over seven starts. He’s completed at least five innings in each of them, including a complete game, two run performance on Tuesday in the Red Sox 10-2 win over the Colorado Rockies.
A two-run home run in the ninth inning spoiled the shutout for Bello, but the righty through the ball as well as he ever has on Tuesday. Against righties, he dotted his sinker low and inside all night, before he put them away with sweepers on the glove side.
Lefties got a steady diet of high fastballs, and low changeups. His five whiffs against the changeup tied a season high.
While the Rockies are a nonthreatening offense, they’re still a major league team. Bello executed his pitches all night, and turned in the longest outing of his career as a result. After the game, he spoke to the media about his accomplishment.
“[I’m] super happy to be able to enter the ninth and complete it,” Bello said via his translator. “The team played a great game. The defense was unbelievable.”
The righty didn’t allow much traffic, but found himself in a jam in the fourth inning. Rockies outfielder Jordan Beck hit a ball deep to center field with a runner on third, but Ceddanne Rafaela ran a long way to track it down to end the inning.
Bello threw 107 pitches on Tuesday. He’s slated to start one more time before the All-Star break, although roster gymnastics might be used to change Alex Cora’s plans.
