Yankees Turning To 24-Year-Old Mass. Native For Rotation Help

New York Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler’s road from Walpole High to the Bronx is about to reach its destination.

The club is preparing to call up the 24-year-old right-hander to make his big league debut this week against the Seattle Mariners. Schlittler, a 2022 seventh-round pick out of Northeastern, has climbed quickly through the system.

He owns a 3.52 ERA across 15 combined starts between Double-A and Triple-A this season and impressed the front office throughout spring training.

“He’s exciting,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Friday, as transcribed by the New York Post. “He really impressed. He’s come on fast and done a good job and certainly put himself in the mix.”

The Yankees are in need of rotation help after Clarke Schmidt was placed on the injured list. Boone confirmed Saturday that Schmidt is likely headed for Tommy John surgery, sidelining him for the rest of this season and possibly all of 2026.

Schlittler is not currently on the 40-man roster, but the Yankees are likely to clear space by shifting Schmidt to the 60-day IL.

At 6-foot-6, the Massachusetts native was once an All-Scholastic standout at Walpole High before shining for the Huskies in the CAA. This season he is 2-1 with a 3.80 ERA in five starts at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and impressed scouts with a sharpened arsenal.

The Yankees already have Massachusetts native Ben Rice on the roster. The Cohasset-born first baseman, who grew up as a Yankees fan on the Cape, has made a strong early impression since his own call-up.

Now, Schlittler has a chance to become the latest Bay State product to suit up for the “Evil Empire.”
