Match preview: Queen’s Park v Celtic

0 0

CELTIC arrive on the southside for the second summer in a row – and if this week’s friendly is anything like the last, GOALS are top of the agenda.

Much has changed on both sides since the last meeting however.

For Queen’s Park there’s been a change in the dugout and a large turnover of players in the first-team squad.

Brendan Rodgers oversaw the Hoops’ 6-4 win last July however he was able to call upon the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi and Matt O’Riley who have since left the Scottish champions

Both teams will be led by new captains from the last meeting 12 months ago

This season he will be able to call upon Scottish internationals Ross Doohan and Kieran Tierney though – and the latter will know The city Stadium well from Scotland training camps with Steve Clarke’s squad.

For Celtic it’s the first pre-season outing but for Sean Crighton’s Spiders it’s the final test before the Premier Sports Cup campaign kicks off in Edinburgh next weekend with a group stage opener against The Spartans.

Looking ahead

Sean Crighton looked ahead to the Scottish champions’ visit – his second home match since assuming the head coach role in May.

Euan Murray also spoke to QPTV for the first time since his skipper selection – and hopes the Spiders can replicate their last Old Firm outing… not his!

The Pre-Season so far...

For Celtic this is the start of pre-season preparations but Queen’s Park have already had three games to warm-up for the new campaign.

It all started last Tuesday with a 2-0 win over Annan Athletic at The city Stadium, where a Josh Fowler double opened his account – and the new-look coaching team’s – with a win.

A Glasgow Cup match with Clyde followed as the Spiders went 1-0 down behind closed doors at Broadwood.

Timam Scott in action against Annan

On Tuesday of this week a trip to Coatbridge saw Sean Crighton experiment with two separate teams – making 11 substitutions at half-time.

The match included three penalties in a 3-3 draw – with Josh Fowler again on target twice after Tyrece McDonnell’s first-half strike.

Each game in front of fans has seen the Spiders sport their new season’s kit.

For Annan it was black and white home shirts, and the navy was worn at Albion Rovers.

Friday night’s match with Celtic is no different and, completing the collection, Queen’s Park will debut their all-black third kit with sand gold trim against the visitors’ traditional green and white hoops.
