Tottenham told they just made a big transfer blunder on an ‘average player’
Jamie O’Hara is unimpressed by Tottenham’s decision to sign Mathys Tel permanently after the forward’s struggles on loan last season.
Tel has become Tottenham’s first signing of the Thomas Frank era, with the Lilywhites paying just under £30m to land him permanently from Bayern Munich.
The Lilywhites saw enough to take a punt on the 20-year-old, even though he only scored three goals in 20 appearances for the club in his loan spell during the second half of last season.
The forward did show glimpses of his quality in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt and some Spurs fans will take heart from Tel’s impressive showing in the European Under-21 championship, but not everyone is convinced that he is good enough to play for a Champions League side.
Jamie O’Hara says Tottenham signing Mathys Tel is down to hope rather than expectation
O’Hara has now come out strongly against the Lilywhites’ decision to sign the Frenchman, insisting that he showed himself to be an “average player” during the last six months at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The former Spurs midfielder insisted that he would rather see young starlet Mikey Moore get more opportunities rather than hope that Tel somehow comes good.
O’Hara told Grosvenor Sport: “I’ve not been convinced by Mathys Tel. He was a ‘try before you buy’ loan signing and I wouldn’t say he impressed on the pitch. I understand that he’s young but he’s an average player in my estimation.
“It seems like Tottenham have signed him because he might come good in the future. But is Tel really going to make a difference at Spurs? I’m not sure. A price tag of €35 million is no meagre fee either.
“I’d rather Mikey Moore play ahead of Tel! He’s come through the academy and is a great home-grown talent. Giving Moore the experience of playing in the Premier League would be far more rewarding long-term than Tel. Moore’s got a high ceiling and could be a fantastic player for Spurs in the future.”
Thomas Frank and the Spurs hierarchy are excited about Tel
Thomas Frank has said that he is delighted to have Tel on board, with the Dane believing that he can improve the France Under-21 international.
Frank specifically referenced the Frenchman’s finishing ability and his versatility, and Spurs fans can be hopeful given how the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Yoane Wissa and Ivan Toney thrived under the 51-year-old’s tutelage at Brentford.
Additionally, Alasdair Gold revealed that the Spurs decision-makers were very impressed with Tel’s technical quality and his attitude in training during his loan spell.
