Celtics Reportedly Add G-League Star To Summer League Roster

After swinging a pair of big trades ahead of the 2025 NBA Draft, the Boston Celtics have largely kept a low profile since then. It’s clear they are still working on making moves, though, and sometimes, the moves they end up making simply don’t generate a ton of attention.

That could certainly be true of the team’s two free agent additions, Luka Garza and Josh Minott. With only a minimal amount of cap space, though, there’s only so much the Celtics can do for the time being.

President of basketball operations Brad Stevens is still hard at work behind the scenes, though, and it resulted in an under-the-radar move being made on Wednesday. According to reports, the C’s have added former G-League star Kenneth Lofton Jr. to their summer league roster.

“Former Grizzlies and 76ers big man Kenneth Lofton Jr. has been added to the Celtics summer league roster, according to league source,” Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe reported.

Lofton initially broke into the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2022 as an undrafted free agent. A two-way player, Lofton only played in 24 games, but he showcased his potential in their regular season finale when he scored 42 points for the Grizzlies.

Despite that. Lofton ended up getting waived by Memphis next season before spending time with the Philadelphia 76ers, Utah Jazz, and Chicago Bulls. Last season, he played overseas in China for the Shanghai Sharks.

While Lofton hasn’t been able to stick in the NBA, he’s been a G-League star in recent years. He earned the Rookie of the Year Award in 2023, in addition to being on the All-NBA G-League First Team in both 2023 and 2024. Last season in China, he earned an All-Star selection and the CBA International MVP.

There’s no guarantee that Lofton will stick around with Boston, but he will have a shot to showcase his skills during summer league action. The Celtics will kick off their summer league campaign when they square off against Lofton’s old Grizzlies team on July 11.
