PSG just taught Lionel Messi a lesson but it could do Tottenham big favours
Paris Saint-Germain brushed aside Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami to secure their spot in the final eight of the Club World Cup, but the result does major favours to Tottenham ahead of their UEFA Super Cup clash against the Parisians.
Barring their one-off day against Brazilian side Botafogo in the Group Stage, PSG have shown their dominance in the Club World Cup, just as they did in the Champions League.
They have brushed aside Atletico Madrid, Seattle Sounders and now Inter Miami to book their place in the quarterfinal of the competition, setting up a heavyweight clash against Bayern Munich.
Spurs fans are understandably not too optimistic about their side’s chances against PSG, but the Ligue 1 side’s latest result at the Club World Cup actually comes as a boost to the North Londoners.
Why Spurs will like the idea of PSG winning Club World Cup
PSG’s win over Inter Miami means they stay in the competition for at least one more week as they are set to take on Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich next Saturday.
Interestingly, a FIFA rule could mean that PSG end up being understrength against Tottenham in the UEFA Super Cup clash, which will be played in Udine on August 13.
This is because FIFA stipulates that players must be given at least three weeks off after any major tournament.
That means that the longer PSG stay in the Club World Cup, the later their players will return for pre-season, thus increasing the chances that many could be undercooked for the clash against Tottenham Hotspur.
Tottenham face a UEFA Super Cup complication of their own
Spurs fans should thus be cheering for PSG in the tournament, hoping that Luis Enrique’s men make the final on July 14, which would mean their squad returns to pre-season just a week before their clash against Tottenham.
However, Thomas Frank’s men have a complication of their own as Tottenham face a tight turnaround from the Super Cup to their first league game.
The Lilywhites have just a three-day gap between the clash against PSG at Udine and their Premier League season opener against Burnley on August 16.
