Euro club now 'preparing' bid to sign United misfit, player is ready to leave
The summer transfer window is shaping up to be defining for Manchester United as they look to revamp a massively underwhelming squad following the atrocities of last season.
The Red Devils are sparing no expense to build a competitive squad for Ruben Amorim to work with, even with Profit and Sustainability Rules breathing down their neck.
Player sales will go a long way in bolstering United’s coffers for the summer. So far, they’ve struggled to find takers for their high-profile misfits, including Marcus Rashford.
But they have now been handed a lifeline in their bid to offload the Englishman.
As per The Times, La Liga champions Barcelona are preparing a loan bid to sign Rashford. At the moment, they’re focused on wrapping up a deal for Athletic Club’s Nico Williams.
But reports claim that wouldn’t scupper their interest in Rashford.
Rashford has been placed on the chopping block after falling out of favour with Amorim. Their relationship is dead in the water, and so is Rashford’s United career.
The 27-year-old spent the second half of the season on loan at Aston Villa. For a long time, Rashford has looked like a shadow of himself, but he found his groove at Villa.
His six-month spell was productive. He scored four goals and weighed in with six assists in 17 appearances across all competitions for the Birmingham-based club.
He also helped Villa reach the Champions League quarter-final, where they were eliminated by eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Rashford’s loan spell at Villa went as well as United would have liked. Unsurprisingly, it has sparked interest from a number of European clubs.
Villa wanted to keep him permanently. They were ready to trigger his £40 million release clause, but Rashford didn’t see his future at Villa Park.
After tasting Champions League football, the England international has decided he wants to join a club that can offer him the chance to play in Europe’s premier tournament.
He has since been clamouring for a move to Barca. On the positive side, the feeling is mutual.
Barca are also keen, but United are unlikely to accept a loan exit for Rashford. They’re adamant that interested clubs would have to trigger his £40m release clause.
Rashford’s outrageous wages at United is another potential stumbling block. But rumour has it he’s willing to take a pay cut to join the Spanish powerhouse this summer.
