MLB Rumors: Red Sox Star Player “Open” To Extension
The infamous Scott Boras was in attendance for the Boston Red Sox’s 9-5 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Monday. It’s not unusual for Boras to attend games in Anaheim, Boras Corporation owns a suite behind the plate.
On Monday, however, there might have been some intention behind his attendance. According to the Boston Globe’s Tim Healy, Boras might have been there to represent his client Alex Bregman.
I always tell the team — and Alex directs me to tell them — we’re always open to any conversation,” Boras said in an interview with the Boston Globe.
When the Red Sox moved on from designated hitter Rafael Devers, they didn’t retain any money, allowing them to reallocate funds in other areas of the team.
Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Red Sox this past offseason. The deal includes opt-outs after each season, though, so Bregman could enter free agency after the season.
A reworked contract would likely include a longer term and an adjustment to the average annual value. The exact length and compensation remain to be seen.
Bregman has been out since May 24. In 51 games before getting hurt, he hit .299 with 11 home runs and 35 runs batted in. While he’s been unavailable, he’s made himself useful to the team in any way possible.
