How Jordan Hicks Fared In First Rehab Start With WooSox
Craig Breslow and the Boston Red Sox baseball operations department knew there would be a little wait before recently acquired right hander Jordan Hicks would make his debut with his fourth organization.
The San Francisco Giants placed the 28-year-old on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his right toe. Hicks would be traded on June 15 in a five-player swap with the Red Sox that sent Rafael Devers to the Giants.
Hicks made his first rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Sunday. Functioning as the opener in the WooSox’s series finale against the Buffalo Bisons, Hicks showed a bit of rust during his brief debut.
Taking the mound in the first inning, Hicks allowed a leadoff single to Leo Jiménez before getting the first out on a lineout to second base. On the very first pitch in the next at-bat, Hicks threw a 96.7 mph sinker that Buffalo center fielder Joey Loperfido drove out of Polar Park for a two-run home run.
Hicks would get the next hitter to fly out, before allowing a single and a walk. His day was done after WooSox manager Chad Tracey made a pitching change with two outs in the inning. Wyatt Mills would get Phil Clarke out on a swinging strike to end the inning.
In 2/3 of an inning, Hicks allowed three hits, two earned runs, a walk, with one strikeout on 23 pitches. It’s likely Hicks will make another appearance with Worcester before being recalled to join Boston’s bullpen during the next home stand.
