Red Sox Manager Alex Cora Reveals Why He Was Ejected Sunday
Umpires are the worst. Just ask Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora.
The Red Sox skipper was ejected in the eighth inning of Boston’s 9-5 loss to the San Francisco Giants. Cora challenged a call at second base when Jarren Duran was called out after sliding past the bag.
Despite looking safe on replay, the replay command center upheld the call and ruled Duran out. The outfielder was ejected almost immediately after the call was announced. Cora was quickly tossed after that.
After the game, Cora spoke to the media and gave some insight as to why he was so upset with the umpiring.
“[Duran] was safe. Clearly, right,” Cora said. “The one that I was upset about was the one at the plate. My whole frustration at the end was more at that.”
The play at the plate Cora is referencing came in the fourth inning. Abraham Toro rounded third and leapt over the catcher’s tag, only to be called out for running out of the baseline. The rule states the runner establishes the baseline, and Toro’s leap didn’t take him far outside of the line he established.
Cora also mentioned his displeasure with the umpiring in Friday night’s game. He and pitching coach Andrew Bailey were visibly upset about the ruling around two check swings late in Friday’s 7=5 victory.
The ejection was Cora’s third of the season. His career high for ejections in a season is four.
