Blow for Man Utd: Academy mastermind who did 'terrific job' set for PL switch

0 9

Manchester United are set to receive a major blow ahead of the 2025-26 season.

According to the Athletic, Everton are in advanced talks to appoint Manchester United’s director of academy Nick Cox as technical director at the club.

Cox joined Man United from Sheffield United in 2016 and became a cornerstone of the club’s youth development system.

He stepped up to lead their academy in 2019 and did a “terrific job”, as described by journalist Samuel Luckhurst.

While his exit has been on the cards for some time, INEOS now face the daunting task of replacing a man who has been pivotal to United’s youth success.

Under Cox’s leadership, the United’s youth team prospered and claimed the famous FA Youth Cup in 2022.

He was instrumental in snapping up top young talents such as Chido Obi from Arsenal and Alejandro Garnacho from Atletico Madrid.

27 academy players have made their first-team debut since Cox took over from Nicky Butt.

The latest to break through include rising prospects Ethan Wheatley, Harry Amass, and Chido Obi.

Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo have established themselves as members of the senior squad.

Everton are undergoing a massive overhaul under new owners the Friedkin Group.

Angus Kinnear was appointed the club’s new chief executive last month.

The Toffees will embark on a fresh chapter in a new stadium, having bid an emotional farewell to Goodison Park.

Cox is expected to stay at United for the coming months and ensure a smooth transition.
