Why Red Sox Players Didn’t Feel Owed An Explanation For Rafael Devers Trade
Make no mistake, Boston Red Sox players were as surprised as everyone else at the timing of the Rafael Devers trade. But as far as the front office justifying the deal to the players, the veterans don’t seem to think that’s necessary.
The Sox dealt Devers to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday, fresh off a sweep of the Yankees. Devers had been on the team plane to make the trip to Seattle — where Boston won the opener 2-0 on Monday — but was pulled off because of the trade.
The win over the Yankees on Sunday extended their winning streak to five games and was the continuation of, without question, their best stretch of baseball.
Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow admitted the timing was not ideal. Despite that, Walker Buehler said Monday he did not feel owed an explanation for the move.
“From the outside perspective, that would seem like a logical thing,” Buehler said, via The Boston Globe. “But this is part of the business. We have no reason to get an explanation. They made a decision. Our job remains the same.”
The Globe also indicated that Garrett Crochet echoed a similar sentiment in a separate interview.
To the Red Sox credit, they did treat Monday as business as usual, stretching the winning streak to six with a 2-0 win over Logan Gilbert and the Mariners. Roman Anthony hit his first major league homer in the win.
