Phillip Lahm
A versatile full back who was so good on the ball Pep Guardiola deployed him in that inverted full back role long before it was popular and had him spraying passes like Xavi. A player known for his leadership, intelligence and positioning Lahm was one of the most technically gifted full backs of any era and a highly successful one. 8 time Bundesliga winner, Champions League winner and a World Cup winning Captain for Germany. Individually a multiple time UEFA and Bundesliga Team of the season member. He is also one of only 3 players to be included in 3 FIFA World Cup team of the Tournaments (the first in over 25 years).
Berti Vogts
A 5 time Bundesliga winner during the golden years for Borussia Mönchengladbach Vogts was one of the best tenacious full backs of his day. Unlike many on these lists Vogts by his own admission wasn't the most gifted, but he worked hard. He trained and gave 100% every game earning a reputation as a no nonsense tough tackling tenacious defender who took no prisoners on the pitch. Though only 5ft6 Vogts was renowned for his uncompromising style and making life difficult for his opponents. So good at it was he that he was a 10 time Kicker Team of the season member, a 2 time German footballer of the year (in the 70s and can make a list of legends Germany had back then) and a World Cup winner with West German in 1974.
Giuseppi Bergomi
The hard man defender of the 3 time Uefa Cup winning Inter Milan side of the 1980s and 90s Bergomi is an Inter legend who represented them for almost 20 years. His reputation as a tough tackling, uncompromising tough guy of Italian football saw him sent off 12 times and regularly named in the hardest footballers ever lists. He was however highly respected and regarded as the ultimate professional hence his long career. A versatile player he was defensively brilliant but also technically gifted and regarded as a ball playing defender long before it became fashionable. Played over 800 games in total, a league title winner with Inter Milan he was also a World Cup winner with Italy in 1982 which given the quality of Italian defenders at the time it shows the regard he was held in. He is one of only 12 players ever to be inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame.
Carlos Alberto Torres
1970 World Cup winning Captain whose leadership skills and the respect he was held in saw him nicknamed O Capitão. During a 20 year playing career Carlos Alberto established himself as one of the best attacking wing backs of all time. Known for his skill and endurance the Brazilian legend established himself as a football icon. He was named in the 2nd team for the best team ever by Ballon'Dor and his performances at the 1970 World Cup saw him named in the World Soccer and FIFA Team of the year. He is also a member of the Brazilian Football Hall of Fame and both Roberto Carlos and Cafu named him as a strong influence.
Djalma Santos
Before Dani Alves, Cafu and Carlos Alberto there was Djalma Santos. The original attacking Brazilian right back and a double World Cup winner in the legendary Brazilian side of the late 50s till the 70s. He was a pioneer as the attacking full back wasn't really a thing back then and whilst he was originally known for his defensive skills (was nicknamed the wall) he morphed into the overlapping full back we know today with his excellent dribbling skills and technically agility making him a valuable attacking weapon. A successful club career Santos won multiple League titles in his native Brazil and Copa Libertadores cups. But he is most famous as the double World Cup winner. A 3 time FIFA World Cup all star member, Pele included him in in his list of the 100 greatest living footballers in 2004 as well. ?
Eric Gerets
Regarded as one of the best Belgian players of all time Eric Gerets has the distinction of being a legendary figure at 2 different clubs. First Standard Leige in Belgium where he won multiple League titles and was a European Cup runner up. And then at PSV where he really shone, 6 league titles and the Captain of the only PSV side ever to win the European Cup. A defensive strong full back Gerets was known as "The Lion of Flanders" for his defensive skills and leadership. Internationally he was also the Captain of Belgium leading them to the European Championship runners up medals in 1980. A very respected player Gerets won many awards, a Belgian player of the year, PSV player of the century (a club which had Ronaldo Nazario and Romario at it during that time) and both club teams named him in their all time 11.
Gary Neville
Not a popular figure on here I'm sure, but the most successful club manager in history gave him his debut and kept him in his side as first choice for over a decade so must have done something right. Gary Neville was a leader, a solid defender known for his reading of the game and defensive qualities. He was one of the most respected Captains in Premier league history and one of the most consistent performers hence his long career. One of the most decorated British players ever, 21 trophies including 2 Champions League wins and 8 Premier league titles Neville was Mr Consistent. A 5 time PFA Team of the year member, a PFA team of the century member and an English football hall of fame member. Neville himself is quite self deprecating about his own playing skills, but he was one of the best right backs around.
