Yankees Announce Roster Move Ahead Of Red Sox Series

The New York Yankees’ roster won’t look the same entering their series with the Boston Red Sox.

After taking two of three games from the Bronx Bombers, the Red Sox can gain more ground in the American League when hosting their rivals for three games at Fenway Park. Unlike last weekend, they’ll have rookie Roman Anthony in tow.

New York is making a less splashy tweak, however, optioning relief pitcher Brent Headrick to Triple-A and promoting Scott Effross.

The Yankees acquired Effross in 2022 after he submitted a 2.66 ERA in 44 innings with the Chicago Cubs. He finished a breakout season by allowing three earned runs in 13 appearances for his new team.

However, Effross missed the entire 2023 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. An additional back surgery in December 2023 further delayed his return, and he pitched just three times for New York last September.

Effross has struggled to regain his past form this season. The 31-year-old has surrendered 19 hits and 11 runs (10 earned) in 10 innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He threw his first scoreless outing since May 15 on Sunday.

Despite those rough results, Effross could make his 2025 big-league debut against Boston. He’ll join a Yankees bullpen that recently welcomed back Fernando Cruz from the injured list but lost Luke Weaver to a hamstring injury.

New York called up Headrick in late May to replace Cruz. He allowed two runs in consecutive outings against Boston, allowing home runs to Rafael Devers on Friday and Sunday.

Following those blasts, left-handed hitters are slugging .583 against the southpaw. The 27-year-old will return to Triple-A, where he’s permitted eight hits, four walks and four runs in 9 2/3 innings this season.
