2025 Gold Cup format: From group stage to knockout rounds

The 2025 Gold Cup follows a structured format that balances group competition with high-stakes elimination rounds, ensuring excitement throughout the tournament…

Group stage: The tournament kicks off with 16 teams divided into 4 groups of 4 teams each. Within each group, teams play a round-robin schedule, meaning every team faces the other three in their group. Points are awarded in the standard way—3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss.

Advancement criteria: At the end of the group stage, the two teams with the highest point totals in each group advance to the knockout rounds. Tiebreakers, such as goal difference and goals scored, are used if teams are level on points.

Knockout rounds: The top 8 teams enter the knockout stage, which consists of quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final. Unlike the group stage, these matches are single elimination—losing teams are immediately eliminated from the tournament. If a knockout match ends in a draw after regular time, extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shootout decide the winner.

This format ensures that the tournament remains competitive and thrilling, with the early stage allowing teams some margin for error and the knockout phase delivering intense, winner-takes-all matchups that determine the eventual champion.
