Rafael Devers Joins Red Sox Legends With Latest Home Run Vs. Yankees
Boston Red Sox star Rafael Devers added another highlight to his storied success against the New York Yankees.
On Sunday night, the Red Sox hit five home runs in an 11-7 win at Yankee Stadium. Devers delivered the final exclamation point by clobbering a Brent Headrick pitch into the right-field bleachers’ second deck during the ninth inning.
Sunday night’s blast marked Devers’ 30th career home run against the Yankees. He’s hitting .272/.349/.535 in 116 games vs. the Bronx Bombers since joining the Red Sox in 2017.
MLB shared a graphic from ESPN’s broadcast noting that only Manny Ramirez needed fewer games (102) to hit 30 home runs against the Yankees as a member of the Red Sox. Devers reached the milestone faster than David Ortiz (125 games), Jim Rice (144), and Ted Williams (146).
Via StatMuse, Devers joined Ramirez, Ortiz, Rice, Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, and Jim Rice as the only players to tally 30 home runs against the Yankees with the Red Sox. Williams tops the leaderboard with 62 long balls — and an absurd .345/.495/.608 slash line — in 327 career games.
Devers started the series by going yard in Friday’s 9-6 loss. The 28-year-old has erased any memories of a sluggish start to the 2025 season by batting .336/.456/.603 since May 1.
However, Sunday’s post-game celebration made way for concern about Devers’ health.
Devers didn’t run out a ground ball during the sixth inning. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said after the game that Devers pulling up was “not a lack of hustle.”
Whatever issue may be bothering Devers didn’t stop him from hitting his 30th home run against the Yankees. The slugger can bolster that tally when Boston hosts New York for another three-game set from Friday to Sunday.
