Liverpool could help Man United offload flop forward, £32.5m needed to avoid PSR loss
Manchester United flop Antony is expected to be shown the exit door this summer as the club gear up for a dramatic squad overhaul.
According to Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Antony is on the transfer shortlist of Bayer Leverkusen, who are monitoring his situation.
Their interest may not be coincidental.
Leverkusen replaced Real Madrid-bound Xabi Alonso with Erik ten Hag, who previously worked with Antony at both Ajax and United and could be the driving force behind this potential reunion.
United splashed a staggering £84 million to bring the Brazilian winger from Ajax in 2022.
His signing was heavily pushed by Ten Hag despite the club’s internal doubts over the price tag.
Antony exploded onto the Premier League scene with three goals in his first three games, giving fans a glimpse of the flair he promised.
But that initial spark quickly fizzled out, with form and off-field distractions derailing his progress in dramatic fashion.
United sent Antony on loan, without a buying option, to Real Betis in January.
The 25-year-old enjoyed a sensational revival in Spain, bagging nine goals and five assists in only 26 games.
His performances made him a fan favourite at Betis as he guided his side to the UEFA Conference League final.
Despite a contract running until 2027, Antony’s chances of donning the red shirt again appear slim.
United have already welcomed Matheus Cunha and look poised to bring in Bryan Mbeumo.
A permanent exit seems the best outcome for both United and Antony.
His terrific loan spell at Betis has helped United by increasing his stock.
Leverkusen may be forced into action if star playmaker Florian Wirtz makes a blockbuster switch to Liverpool this summer.
That departure could open the door for Antony to replace him.
United value him at around £40m as they need to recoup at least £32.5m to avoid recording a loss on him under the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
