The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Tuesday 3rd June) 6ft 5' beast on Leeds radar

Good Morning. It's Tuesday 3rd June, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

6ft 5' beast on Leeds radar

Leeds United have joined the chase for experienced striker Davie Selke, whose contract with Hamburg is set to expire at the end of June. According to reports, the Whites face stiff competition from Premier League rivals West Ham United and Fulham, as well as Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, for the 30-year-old's signature. While Watford are also mentioned, they are considered outsiders due to the Premier League and Bundesliga interest.

Selke is coming off a stellar season with Hamburg, where he played a pivotal role in their promotion push, netting an impressive 23 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions. His performances have drawn comparisons to German legend Miroslav Klose, with former striker Klaus Fischer praising his stature and aerial prowess. Selke himself, however, idolizes former Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez.

Standing at an imposing 6ft 5in, Selke presents a significant aerial threat and a classic target man presence, a profile rarely seen at Elland Road. His goalscoring record speaks for itself, with 22 goals in 31 league appearances for the Bundesliga 2 runners-up.

Leeds United have already made initial contact to gauge Selke's wage demands, indicating serious interest in bringing him to West Yorkshire. However, their pursuit may hinge on RB Leipzig's potential withdrawal from the race due to the Red Bull group owning stakes in both clubs, which could present a conflict of interest.

The potential arrival of Selke would offer Leeds United a different dimension in attack, providing a physical presence and aerial threat that they have arguably lacked in recent seasons. Whether they can overcome the competition and convince Selke to join their ranks remains to be seen, but the club's interest highlights their desire to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the upcoming season.

Cold Water Poured on Kalvin Phillips' Leeds Return

Dreams of a Kalvin Phillips homecoming at Elland Road might be premature, with Graham Smyth of The Yorkshire Evening Post pouring cold water on the idea. While a fairytale return would apease the Elland Road massive, several significant hurdles stand in the way.

Firstly, Phillips is currently battling an Achilles issue, sidelining him until August. This immediately diminishes the appeal of signing him this summer, as he wouldn't be available for the crucial pre-season preparations and the start of the new campaign.

Beyond his fitness, Phillips' hefty wages present a major stumbling block. Signed to a long-term contract with Manchester City until 2028, he earns a salary far exceeding Leeds United's current wage structure. Smyth emphasizes that this is the primary obstacle, as Leeds, fresh out of the Championship, simply cannot afford his current earnings.

The "life-changing deal" Phillips signed with City necessitates a significant pay cut for a permanent return to Leeds. Smyth points out that Phillips would have to forgo "an enormous sum of money," a prospect that makes a permanent transfer highly unlikely.

Earlier reports suggested a loan deal could circumvent the expensive transfer fee, but even that option isn't straightforward. Phillips' wages are so high that Manchester City would likely have to cover a substantial portion of his salary, similar to the arrangement during his loan spell with Ipswich. While they were willing to do so then, it doesn't guarantee the same willingness this summer.

Ultimately, while there's no future for Phillips at the Etihad, a return to Leeds is fraught with complications. His injury, combined with his enormous wages, make the prospect of seeing him back in a white shirt more of a pipe dream than a realistic possibility. As Smyth suggests, Phillips is on the kind of money that "only madness could inspire you to walk away from," leaving Leeds fans to temper their expectations.
