Red Sox Make Slew Of Roster Moves Before Matchup With Orioles
Marcelo Mayer is about to get his first shot with the Red Sox.
Boston made several roster moves Saturday before Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park, highlighted by the promotion of Mayer from Triple-A Worcester to the big league club.
While Mayer is “amped up” to make his major league debut, the Red Sox received the unfortunate news that Alex Bregman’s injury is more “severe” than anticipated. The club placed the third baseman on the 10-day injured list and transferred first baseman Triston Casas to the 60-day IL.
Mayer is hitting .271/.347/.471 at Triple-A, with nine home runs, 43 RBI and 31 runs scored.
In other roster news, the Red Sox recalled right-handed pitcher Luis Guerrero from Triple-A Worcester. Boston designated left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb for assignment to make room on the active roster.
Guerrero has pitched in three games for Boston this season, tossing four scoreless innings with one hit and three strikeouts. He has made 13 appearances for Worcester, recording a 4.91 ERA across 18 1/3 innings of work. Newcomb posted a 3.95 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 41 innings over 12 games, including five starts, for Boston.
