Alex Cora Shares Red Sox Emergency Third Base Plan After Alex Bregman Injury
BOSTON — The Red Sox are in a really tough spot if Alex Bregman has to miss time at third base.
The Boston star exited Friday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles with right quad tightness and will not play in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
Manager Alex Cora shared that Nick Sogard will play third base Friday night and expanded on other options at the position if Bregman misses time.
Cora listed Sogard, Ceddanne Rafaela, Abraham Toro and Connor Wong as candidates to play third base in a pinch for the Red Sox. He stayed away from listing David Hamilton and Kristian Campbell as options due to inexperience at the position.
Marcelo Mayer, who played second base again for Triple-A Worcester Friday afternoon, also got looks at the position in his MiLB career.
“In case of an emergency, we can move (Campbell) to the outfield, Ceddanne to the infield and go from there,” Cora said between games.
And no, Cora did not name Rafael Devers as an option for the Red Sox to play third base.
Bregman called his injury “day-to-day,” and the Red Sox will see how he feels Saturday. The Red Sox won Game 1 of the doubleheader with a 19-5 victory and hope to find momentum to round out the 10-game homestand.
