Man United face backlash for making huge decision just 48 hours after Europa League defeat

0 13

The Manchester United football department is bracing for another clear-out over the next few days.

According to The Athletic, staff are being informed whether their jobs are at risk, with the club looking to cut another 200 jobs from the workforce.

The latest move is part of a larger cost-cutting plan under Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s leadership. This will be the second major round of redundancies in less than a year.

The timing of United’s decision has received plenty of internal backlash.

Many employees who supported the squad in Wednesday’s Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur were notified by email that they would learn their fate just days later.

It is believed that physiotherapists and masseurs will be particularly impacted.

This is coming a day after the club organised a barbecue at Carrington for the same staff that are on thin ice, and they’ve made their feelings clear about the timing of the decision.

Other departments were informed of possible redundancies earlier in the month.

United postponed the process for those around the first team to avoid disrupting preparations for the final, but many of them have been left feeling blindsided.

The clear-out will also affect the scouting team, although United had already planned to let go of the director of scouting, Steve Brown, director of football operations, David Harrison, and director of innovations, Richard Hawkins.

Back in February, United announced plans to sanction between 150 and 200 redundancies following the 250 redundancies made the previous summer.

This takes the number of redundancies at United to 450 since Ratcliffe purchased a minority stake.

That’s a major clear-out from the 1,112 average monthly employees listed in the club’s accounts for the year ending June 2023.

Since taking control of the club, Ratcliffe has made many cost-cutting decisions to get a hold of United’s dire financial situation.

The Red Devils have accumulated £373 million in losses for five consecutive years. The last time they turned a profit was in 2018/19.

Missing out on the Champions League makes United’s financial situation even worse. They’re expected to be busy this summer, but a major squad overhaul is on the cards.
