James Maddison hits back at Man Utd legend in interview after Tottenham’s Europa League final win

0 5

James Maddison could not help himself after Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League triumph over Manchester United, aiming a cheeky dig at Roy Keane during the post-match interviews.

James Maddison would have been itching to have played a part in Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League final clash against Manchester United in Spain at the San Mames Stadium.

That was not the case for the Englishman, who is injured and sidelined for the next three months following a knee injury.

Maddison, though, was in attendance at Spurs’ final clash in Bilbao, but as a supporter, with the attacking midfielder cheering his team on from the stands.

James Maddison trolls Roy Keane after Tottenham win

The former Leicester City man has been a vital part of Tottenham’s European run, contributing with goals and assists in the majority of their knockout ties in the Europa League.

Maddison grabbed a goal against Bodo/Glimt in the first leg of their semi-final clash, he won a penalty against Eintracht Frankfurt in the second leg of the quarter final, he got a goal in the first leg tie against the German side and scored in the return leg against AZ Alkmaar in the round of 16.

Yet, the Englishman faced criticism earlier on in the season from Roy Keane, who suggested the midfielder was lacking in consistency, before Maddison responded by scoring against Manchester United when the two last met in the Premier League.

Now, months later, the England international took the opportunity to aim a dig in the direction of Keane, before pulling out his trademark darts celebration to add salt to the former United man’s wounds.

“I was not gonna do any interviews but I heard Roy Keane was in the studio tonight,” the Spurs star told the CBS panel after the game.

He then faced calls from Micah Richards to throw the imaginary darts, to which he agreed, adding: “Oh I will, Micah, with pleasure!”

Keane replied by saying: “I always said he was a good player, but he needs to be more consistent,” he began. “And he played well tonight!”

Spurs fans hopeful as James Maddison races to return

Maddison is racing against time to be fit before the start of the 2025/26 season. The Tottenham star has been one of the few avenues of goal for the Lilywhites this campaign, with the Englishman chipping in with 12.

Ange Postecoglou opted for Pape Matar Sarr in midfield in the absence of his creative tens, and the Senegalese played a role in the only goal of the final, with his cross causing a mix-up in the United box before Brennan Johnson poached home.

Tottenham fans will be hoping Maddison makes it in time for next season, as they have a UEFA Super Cup tie still to come on 13 August 2025.
