Amad Diallo succeeds Alejandro Garnacho as Man United’s Goal of the Season winner

0 2

Amad Diallo’s strike in Manchester United’s 2-1 win at Manchester City in the Premier League in December has been voted the club’s Goal of the Season.

After receiving a long pass from defender Lisandro Martinez, he dinked the ball over goalkeeper Ederson before scoring on the stroke of full-time.

The strike was also voted the club’s Goal of the Month in December, beating Rasmus Hojlund’s strike versus Viktoria Plzen, Bruno Fernandes’s goal against Forest and Joshua Zirkzee’s effort versus Everton.

Mason Mount’s long-range strike in the Europa League semi-final second leg victory over Athletic Bilbao was voted the second-best goal of the season.

Kobbie Mainoo’s magnificent goal in the dramatic 5-4 win over Lyon at Old Trafford finished third.

The award was first given in the 2005/2006 season. Diallo is its 15th winner, succeeding Alejandro Garnacho, whose overhead kick against Everton won it last season.

The Ivorian has been in magnificent form this season, playing well in several positions under former manager Erik ten Hag and his successor Ruben Amorim.

He has contributed 10 goals and nine assists across all competitions. He was the favourite for the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award before he suffered an ankle ligament injury in February.

Diallo has won United’s Player of the Month award on three occasions this term —Fernandes is the only player to have won it more.

The Portuguese has now beaten the Ivorian to the Player of the Year award.

Diallo has grown immensely at United since the second half of last season and was rewarded with a new long-term contract in January.

His return from injury is a big boost for the Red Devils as they seek to end the season on a high by winning the Europa League.

Since his return, he has started just one game. He could start against Tottenham at San Mames next week.
