Preview: Celtic (H)

Hibs Women take on Celtic in a pivotal ScottishPower Women’s Premier League clash at Meadowbank Stadium this Wednesday. 

The Hibees’ penultimate league fixture, which will have a major effect on the title race, kicks off at 6pm on Wednesday 14 May. 

The Lowdown

Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Glasgow City keeps Grant Scott’s side top of the SWPL table heading into the midweek fixture card.

With two games to go, Hibs – on 71 points – lead both second-place Rangers and third-place City by three points. 

Nicole Kozlova’s second-half leveller earned City the share of the points at the weekend, after Kathleen McGovern and Eilidh Adams had given the Hibees a 2-1 lead at the break. 

We head into the second-last round of fixtures as the form team in the league; with the girls unbeaten in five league games – winning three and drawing two. 

The Visitors

Celtic are seeking a fourth-place finish in the league with two matches remaining, with the current league holders having lost their last two matches after previously going four unbeaten.

Elena Sadiku’s outfit are currently joint on points and goal difference with fifth-place Hearts, edging out the Edinburgh club by goals scored. But only just, with Celtic’s 89 goals scored just beating out Hearts’ tally of 88. 

Our last meeting ended in a frustrating goalless draw in April at New Douglas Park, as did our first away meeting with the Hoops back in August. The last time the two sides met at Meadowbank ended in a narrow Hibs victory, however, as Eilidh Adams headed home the winner on the day. 

Avoiding defeat on Wednesday would ensure Hibs Women’s first head-to-head unbeaten season versus Celtic since the 2019 campaign.
