‘Strong in those three areas’ - Gary Neville blown away with ‘big difference’ much-maligned Man Utd figure has made since arrival
Manchester United have yet to feel any positive impact of the co-ownership of Sir Jim Ratcliffe more than a year after the British billionaire acquired part of the club, but Gary Neville is convinced the future is bright under him.
INEOS, under his leadership, has taken control of the footballing operations of the Red Devils, but the Old Trafford side are currently 16th in the Premier League after 36 games and could end the season in 17th if they fail to pick up much-needed points against Chelsea and Aston Villa.
Man United are preparing for the summer transfer window as head coach Ruben Amorim looks to impress in his first full season in charge, and Neville believes his old club could be on their way back to the top if they get major decisions right in the coming weeks and months.
“There’s definitely a big difference in the approach in the last 12 months and I think Ineos have come in and been strong in those three areas that you can control,” the former Man United captain told The Telegraph.
“On the football side, that’s the bit that was always going to be the most difficult and take the longest and I think there’s going to be some bumps in the road. But we’re in a Europa League final and, if we win, Champions League qualification next season, that would really be grabbing victory from defeat in what has been a difficult season. It’s a big few weeks.”
“Amorim needs supporting in the transfer window in the summer, so we can hopefully go on and create a new team that can start to show progression and get towards that top four next season”.
The Red Devils do not have a sporting director after Ratcliffe fired Dan Ashworth last December, and his right-hand man Sir Dave Brailsford, chief executive officer Omar Berrada and technical director Jason Wilcox have been sharing the responsibilities of the position since then.
They will have to work together with Amorim as the Portuguese plots a squad overhaul this summer and going forward for Man United to become a force to be reckoned with again anytime soon, and all eyes will be on the quality of business they do when the transfer window opens.
