Intriguing Intel Revealed About Potential Celtics Minority Owners
Bill Chisholm isn’t sitting on easy street now that he’s set to become the owner of the Boston Celtics.
Before Chisholm can navigate how to keep a title-winning roster together despite the enormous payroll numbers, he first needs to finalize the financing to buy the Celtics after a group led by Chisholm agreed to a pay a record $6.1 billion for the franchise.
It look likes Chisholm has that handled, though, which will move him on to the next step: securing minority owners.
That might be an easy task for Chisholm with interest to purchase a stake in the 18-time NBA champions — perhaps 19-time by the middle of June — probably soaring through the roof.
The Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach on Saturday revealed interesting details about who might end up becoming a Celtics minority owner.
“In the coming weeks, the names of new minority investors likely will be revealed, and the group likely will have a local flair,” Himmelsbach wrote. “A source familiar with the sale process said it was important to Chisholm to offer existing owners an opportunity to remain with the team, as well as to continue to establish connections with other local business leaders. Although it has not been finalized, sources suggested that a high-profile name or two from the Boston sports scene could become a minority owner, too.”
The last sentence from Himmelsbach certainly is the most intriguing and raises the question about which Boston’s sports figures might try to grab a piece of the Celtics.
Could Tom Brady look to invest in the Celtics after being a part owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, Las Vegas Aces and Birmingham City, a professional soccer team in England? What about David Ortiz? He attends Celtics games on occasion and can be seen sitting courtside during the playoffs.
It wouldn’t be surprising either if one of Robert Kraft’s sons — outside of Jonathan Kraft who appears to be next in line for the New England Patriots iron throne — potentially tries to dip his toe into the Celtics ownership waters.
Chisholm is expected to own 51% of the Celtics when the deal is finalized, which won’t come until after the NBA’s board of governors approves the sale in either June or July. He will then take full control from Wyc Grousbeck in 2028.
