James Maddison admits he felt embarrassed by what he had to do a few days ago

0 6

James Maddison has spoken about the feeling in the Tottenham camp this season on the back of poor results and admitted that he felt embarrassed to do what he was asked to following the Lilywhites’ 5-1 loss against Liverpool.

Almost no one was given a chance for Tottenham to get something from Anfield, given that Liverpool were going for the title and the North London side had nothing to play for.

However, the performance that Ange Postecoglou’s men delivered was once again abject, with the away side treated like minnows by Liverpool – and not for the first time this season.

It is not the sort of thrashing Tottenham would have wanted leading up to a big Europa League semifinal as they look to put the setback behind them and get the job done against Bodo/Glimt.

James Maddison was embarrassed in his post-match interview

It was Maddison who had to front up to the media after the final whistle and the attacking midfielder has admitted that it is the last thing he wanted to do.

The 28-year-old revealed that everyone at the club is hurting with the way the Premier League season has gone, but pointed out that he and his teammates have a golden opportunity to put things right by making a European final.

When asked how he feels personally after bad results like the one at Anfield, Maddison told Football.London: “I don’t feel personally responsible because it is collective. It is everyone. No one in the whole club – from top to bottom – can be satisfied internally, to be satisfied with where we are. It definitely hurts.

“The hurt, it is a tough one. As I said, I had to do an interview at Liverpool on Sunday and we have lost 5-1. It is a little bit embarrassing, I am a bit embarrassed myself and you have to go and talk. And I know no-one actually wants to hear what I have got to say because they want to see the reaction. And get the reaction.

“And that is the chance we have on Thursday night which is the beauty of the quick turnaround because we can go and put it right on Thursday if we get a good result.

“And then in seven days’ time, we have got another massive game and if we get through that, we are in a European final so there are positives there. But we have got to go and do it and we have got to show them we are just as hungry as they are to win something.”

Ange Postecoglou blasts critics for downplaying Europa League run

Due to Tottenham’s abject form in the Premier League, they perhaps have not got enough credit for their run in the Europa League.

That is certainly how the club’s head coach feels, with Postecoglou blasting critics for downplaying Tottenham’s Europa League run.

The Australian pointed out that reaching a European final would be a huge achievement for Spurs, irrespective of whether they were flying or struggling in the league and insisted that his side will fully deserve Champions League qualification if they lift the trophy in Bilbao.
