Tottenham have a problem as Man United hatch plan to sign Johnny Cardoso
One of Tottenham’s Premier League rivals have reportedly set their sights on Johnny Cardoso, with Manchester United coming up with an interesting plan to lure the Real Betis man to Old Trafford.
Tottenham have a £21m option to buy Johnny Cardoso this summer, which they acquired last year, and that move already appears a masterstroke as the 23-year-old has evolved into arguably the best number six in La Liga.
Over the past couple of months, some Spanish outlets have treated it as a foregone conclusion that Cardoso is on his way to Spurs, and one can understand why, as the clause seems like a no-brainer for the North London club to activate.
However, one source cast doubt on the transfer earlier this month by claiming that Cardoso may have a change of heart and remain at Betis.
Tottenham face competition from Man United for Johnny Cardoso
It turns out that the Lilywhites may have further complications in their pursuit of the Betis man, as journalist Sam Cohen has now claimed that Man United have also entered the race for the player.
He says that Ruben Amorim’s men have been scouting Cardoso over recent weeks with the intention of pushing ahead with a move this summer.
With United winger Antony currently on loan at the Spanish side, it is suggested that the Manchester club could look to secure the midfielder in a direct swap deal.
Why Europa League win will dictate summer transfer tussle
It looks like Spurs and the Red Devils are eyeing many of the same transfer targets ahead of the summer.
According to reports, Tottenham and Man Utd are both keen on Tyler Dibling while it has also been suggested that both Postecoglou and Amorim want Eberechi Eze.
Now, it appears Tottenham and Man United could also go head-to-head for Johnny Cardoso. If one of the two sides wins the Europa League and secures entry into the Champions League, that could give them a big advantage over the other in these transfer pursuits.
