Alan Hutton makes grim prediction about ‘desperate’ Daniel Levy at Tottenham
Alan Hutton has shed light on his own time working with Daniel Levy at Tottenham and has made a prediction about the Spurs chairman’s plans that the supporters will not like.
The discontent among fans towards the owners have reached a boiling point this season, with Spurs fans organising several major protests against ENIC and Levy over recent months.
The demands of the disgruntled supporters are for Levy to take a step back from the running of the club and many would have hoped that the appointment of Vinai Venkatesham as the CEO was a step towards doing that.
However, it was reported by The Telegraph last week that Levy is not expected to give up control despite Venkatesham’s arrival, with the 63-year-old set to continue calling the shots.
Alan Hutton does not see Daniel Levy walking away
Hutton pointed out that the question marks about the way Levy runs the footballing side of the club have been consistently raised from his time at White Hart Lane.
The former Tottenham right-back remarked that Levy will not walk away from the club he loves, adding that winning the Europa League might absolve the pressure that is currently on him.
When asked if he could see the Spurs chairman taking a step back from the footballing side of the club, Hutton told Football Insider: “I just don’t see it, I honestly don’t see it. Even from my time when I was there, these questions were getting bandied about from then. I mean that was ‘08 and we’re still kind of talking about it now.
“I genuinely believe he loves the club. He wants it to do well. He runs it exceptionally well as a business, and I understand there are two parts to it. There’s a playing side and a business side, and in an ideal world, they would both marry up and be perfect, but it’s not quite how it works.
“And I think he’s desperate for success, but hopefully when they get the trophy that they’ve all been dying for, then the kind of the heat around him can kind of settle down and die down a little bit, but for me, I just don’t see him walking away. Not at this moment of time or not in the next two, three, four, five years or any way.”
Daniel Levy has gone against his modus operandi this season
Over the last decade and a half, Levy has been very quick to pull the plug on any Spurs manager once a top-four finish proves out of reach.
Yet, he has not done that this season and has continued to persist with Postecoglou, presumably because he thinks that it gives the club the best chance of winning the Europa League trophy.
If Postecoglou does guide Spurs to silverware in Bilbao next month, Levy deserves credit for holding his nerve amidst widespread calls to sack the Australian.
