Man Utd wanted 22y/o with 56 PL goals involvement since last term before settling for Cunha - report
Manchester United would be perfectly willing to make Chelsea attacker Cole Palmer a summer transfer target if there was any hint of a move, but they are aware that is virtually impossible, according to the Independent journalist Miguel Delaney.
He claimed in his ‘Reading the Game’ weekly newsletter on Friday that it is the reason the Red Devils are now closing in on a move for his Wolverhampton Wanderers counterpart Matheus Cunha.
Man United want to sign a midfielder and forward as head coach Ruben Amorim looks to bolster his squad ahead of his first full season in charge, and Palmer would have been a perfect addition having weighed in with 36 Premier League goals and 20 assists since the beginning of last season.
However, the Blues are unwilling to lose the talented 22-year-old anytime soon and the Red Devils have quickly moved on to Cunha.
The Brazilian is expected to join them ahead of other suitors when the summer transfer window opens, and he brings the much-needed experience and quality to the table having scored 16 goals and assisted four others in 31 appearances thus far in 2024-25.
The 25-year-old Brazilian has shown that he can succeed in the exact formation Amorim deploys having done so at Wolves, and he has what it takes to do much more than he is currently doing at the Midlands club at Man United.
The Red Devils are ready to activate the £63 million release clause in Cunha’s contract, which is a decent fee for such a player, and they will hope he hits the ground running at the Old Trafford club if a deal can be struck.
Man United need more than one or two top signings if they are serious about challenging for major trophies next season, and winning the Europa League could help boost their chances of raising funds and attracting big-name players in the summer.
