Grant Savoury – I’m back, now here’s my next target

'One of the most dedicated players I’ve ever seen to get back playing, set back after set back & never stopped smiling & working hard. A top top player & even better person'

THE WORDS of former Queen’s Park captain Dom Thomas as he reacted to Grant Savoury’s return against Hamilton on Saturday.

The former Spiders captain was on the pitch against Partick Thistle when Savoury suffered a knee injury on May 9, 2023.

Almost two years later he was delighted – as the entire Queen’s Park contingent were – to see the 24-year-old back on the pitch.

After 711 days on the sidelines, it may have been only nine minutes – but those 540 seconds were some of the biggest in the season, and Savoury’s career.

He’d had his eye on the game for months and reached his target when he replaced Roddy MacGregor for the closing stages of the 0-0 draw at New Douglas Park.

Now the fan favourite has another before the end of the season and speaking to QPTV at full-time he was all smiles – as his old captain said he always was.

Grant beamed: “It’s been a long road and I’m delighted to get the monkey off my back and get onto the pitch – plus it was a good point for the boys.

“The carrot throughout the hard times of the injury has been to get back and playing again.

“It’s been a target for the last couple of months.

“I’ve been feeling good over the past wee while – stronger and fitter, and I think this game was the one I could see on the fixture list that I could aim for.

“Training is obviously fun and I was pleased to get back for that but it’s the games you want to be involved in as quickly as possible.

“I haven’t felt too far off it in the sessions so I’m just delighted to finally get on the pitch.”

Now he has his eye on a making up for lost time more – and maybe making even more special memories.

He added: “It’s a massive point for us and there’s obviously only a couple of games left in the season and the points really matter.

“The boys fought really hard for it and I think it was deserved in the end.

“Hopefully I have more to contribute and I want to make an impact in the last couple of games, whether that’s coming off the bench or whatever I can do.

“But I’d love to maybe get a goal before the end of the season.”

Interim head coach Steven MacLean was pleased for the play-maker too.

He said: “He’s been through a tough time and to get back onto the football pitch is a credit to himself and everyone who’s worked with him over the past two years.

“I’ve been there myself- it can be a dark place at times.

“It is just great to have him back.

“He brings a freshness and he has great quality as well.

“He’s only been training with the group for a week, and every day this week he’s been telling me he wants to be involved and that shows the man he is.

“We’ve had to put the reins on him a wee bit because he’s been in playing full contact and desperate to get involved.

“To have him on the park was fantastic and listen, Grant Savoury is a top player and if we can get him going over the next couple of games it’ll be a big help for us.”
