With 15 minutes to play: Amorim reveals how he scripted Hollywood ending at Old Trafford vs Lyon
Manchester United scripted a night for the ages as they edged past Lyon in a jaw-dropping Europa League quarter-final thriller at Old Trafford on Thursday.
The Red Devils looked to be cruising when they stormed into a 2-0 lead by half time.
A sensational comeback from Lyon forced the game into extra time.
The visitors struck twice again to silence the United faithful and put one foot in the semi-finals.
Just when hope seemed lost, United conjured up a miracle straight out of Hollywood in the dying minutes.
Three goals in the final seven minutes sent the stadium into a frenzy, sparking scenes of wild celebration and disbelief.
Head coach Ruben Amorim revealed in the post-match conference what he told his players at half-time in extra-time.
He said (via ManUtd.com): “At half-time in extra-time we had to change the positions, to try to be really clear about the position of Harry Maguire.
“Try to put Casemiro near the goal, Kobbie Mainoo near the goal, Mason Mount to cross balls and try to explain that we need to score one goal and anything can change, so it is pushing on with the team.
“Of course, it is a difficult moment and then we have to be really lucky to change the game and this was the case today.”
Amorim’s magic mantra helped United claim a dream victory in their most important game of the season.
Casemiro played a central role in all three late goals.
He won a penalty in the 114th minute, which Bruno Fernandes dispatched with great calmness.
He combined with Fernandes to play a deft pass to Mainoo, who kept his composure and fired United level with a precise finish.
As the game entered added time, Casemiro delivered a delicious cross to the far post, where Maguire thundered in a header that sent Old Trafford into delirium.
Amorim must be praised for having nerves of steel and making these tactical adjustments to engineer a miracle at the end.
The Portuguese manager has already stated that his side will prioritise the Europa League for the rest of the season, even if it means giving a few youngsters opportunities in the Premier League.
