This Giants Quarterback Report Could Affect Patriots’ Draft Plans
The Patriots theoretically would benefit from the Giants drafting a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft.
However, that is operating under the assumption that the G-Men do so with the No. 3 pick, which would allow a potential franchise non-quarterback — either Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter — to fall to New England at No. 4.
But what if New York drafts a quarterback with a different pick?
It’s not exactly a groundbreaking idea, but it is one NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport proposed Thursday on NFL Network. Rapoport touched on the Giants’ highly publicized decision to take another look at Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, but they’ll also work out some other signal-callers.
In addition to Sanders, the Giants have already worked out Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart, and they’ll also get an in-person look at Alabama’s Jalen Milroe and Louisville product Tyler Shough this week.
“(Milroe is) probably not an option at No. 3 but might be an option either later in the first round if the Giants trade up or early in the second round if they stay put,” Rapoport said.
On Shough, Rapoport said the QB is “a name that sounds to me like is rising a little bit at least in the eyes of the public. Teams have already known what kind of player he was, but at least publicly, it’s becoming clear he’s considered among the top quarterbacks. …Not sure if that’s at (No.) 3, but maybe that’s a second-round pick.”
That came after ESPN reporter Peter Schrager made some headlines earlier this week by relaying information he received from a general manager who said Shough is the best thrower in the draft. NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero also called the 25-year-old one of his top five risers, saying some believe he might be the “readiest of the whole QB group to play in the NFL right now.“
More Patriots
The Giants also don’t need to draft a quarterback, at least not for the 2025 season. New York already signed Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston with Tommy DeVito in the QB room, too. It’s not great, but it’s not the worst collection of talent, and at the very least, it could convince the Giants they can take the best available player at No. 3 before taking a chance on one of the lesser guys down the board. That’s especially true in a year like this when the QB position isn’t deep.
So it’s not surprising to hear Rapoport insist the Giants “are doing a full canvas of the quarterbacks to make sure they’re absolutely informed as possible.” The Patriots can only hope that means they fall in love with someone at No. 3.
