''Unrealistic’: Fabrizio Romano dismisses United's interest in £68m star
Manchester United are reportedly interested in Barcelona’s brilliant winger Raphinha.
United showed interest in the Brazil international before he completed a move to Barcelona in the summer of 2023. They were also linked with him last summer.
Raphinha was not spectacular in his first season at Barcelona, and there were reports that he could leave the club.
However, he has established himself as a key player for the Blaugrana under manager Hansi Flick, leading their charge for a treble.
The former Leeds United star has chipped in with 28 goals and 22 assists across all competitions. He is the second top-scorer in the Champions League.
The Red Devils have been credited with an interest in the £68 million-rated forward as they seek to bolster their attacking options.
However, journalist Fabrizio Romano (via YouTube) has discredited the report linking United to the outstanding Barcelona forward.
He said: “There are rumours on Raphinha and Man United. Let me clarify that Raphinha is happy at Barcelona. He is having an incredible season, so that is absolutely the case.
“Raphinha is in initial conversation with Barcelona over a new deal. Nothing has been agreed or closed now.
“He is under contract until 2027, so there is still plenty of time. Also, remember what Hansi Flick did when he arrived at Barcelona. He called to inform him that he was part of his team. Barcelona’s intention is absolutely to trust Raphinha.
“Financially, for Man United to sign a player like Raphinha would be quite complicated. Financial Fair Play will be important. This kind of signing is not just unlikely but also unrealistic.”
Besides the deal not being financially realistic for United, the Brazilian’s age (28) is another factor that could hinder a deal from happening.
United’s present strategy is to invest in younger signings. It is one reason why they are unlikely to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.
