Ornstein reveals 'unclear' stance on Man Utd star's return, his agent may look to 'shift' him away from Old Trafford
Manchester United are keen to offload their out-of-favour stars in the summer to boost their transfer budget.
Head coach Ruben Amorim made headlines by dropping Andre Onana from the squad for the trip to face Newcastle United.
It marked the first time Onana missed a Premier League fixture since his high-profile arrival from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023.
Altay Bayindir stepped into the spotlight, making his long-awaited Premier League debut between the posts against the Magpies.
Reputed journalist David Ornstein revealed before the game that it is ‘unclear’ whether Onana will return against Lyon in mid-week.
He said (via NBC Sports Soccer): “It is unclear if he will return for the Thursday second leg which is so huge against Lyon.
“It does raises questions over the future of Onana.
“He has switched agents in recent months which was meant for a new contract with improved terms.
“He may now have to look to shift his player and this would not have been expected by Manchester United.”
The Cameroon international has struggled to justify his £47.2 million price tag since arriving at Old Trafford.
In less than two seasons, Onana has produced a string of costly errors that have eroded the faith of fans and coaches alike.
He was one of the main reasons behind United’s group-stage exit from the UEFA Champions League last term.
His woes continued in mid-week, when he was again culpable for both of Lyon’s goals in the Europa League quarter-final first leg.
The Red Devils brought Onana in with hopes he could transform their build-up play and inject confidence into playing from the back.
His poor shot-stopping has dented his confidence, nullyfying his ability to act as the proactive, sweeping presence he once was at Inter.
Should United decide to cut their losses and move him on, they will need a suitor willing to pay a decent fee.
This would be essential to avoid recording a financial loss under the Premier League’s Profit & Sustainability Rules (PSR).
