Contact made: Man Utd should now agree deal for "unbelievable" 22yo star to replace Onana
Manchester United are preparing for a busy summer transfer window.
The Red Devils are likely to sign a marquee striker, considering they have misfired in the final third.
The club have netted just 37 goals from 31 Premier League games this term.
Alongside a centre-forward, we believe United should pursue a new first-choice goalkeeper.
Andre Onana has made a staggering eight errors leading to goals since the start of last season.
Two of those came in the 2-2 draw against Lyon in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final.
In our view, the Red Devils must cut their losses on the 29-year-old this summer.
The Red Devils should replace him with Brighton & Hove Albion’s Bart Verbruggen, who was previously on their radar during his time at Anderlecht.
United did not pursue a deal in the summer of 2023, but Gazzetta dello Sport (page 15) claim that the club have now asked information regarding him.
The Italian publication don’t specify anything else but Verbruggen would be a decent upgrade on Onana, who has underperformed for the club thus far.
The Netherlands international has a passing accuracy of 76 percent in the league compared to Onana’s 70 percent. He has managed more long balls (5.3 to 4.3) per game.
Verbruggen has made the occasional error leading to a goal, but the Dutchman has a higher ceiling at 22.
The 22-year-old, described as “unbelievable” by Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler, fits perfectly into Ruben Amorim’s set-up with his strong ball-playing ability.
Verbuggen has a Transfermarkt value of £22 million. The Seagulls signed him for £16.3m and could be convinced to sanction his departure for £40m this summer.
