Ange Postecoglou slammed for ‘arrogant’ behaviour in Chelsea vs Tottenham
Ange Postecoglou’s strange decision to cup his ears at the Spurs away end before Sarr’s goal was disallowed has now been branded “arrogant” by former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara.
As if losing to London rivals Chelsea wasn’t bad enough, Postecoglou’s antics on the touchline have sparked even more noise around Tottenham Hotspur.
The Australian is under increasing pressure as Spurs continue to falter in the business end of the season. Another defeat at Stamford Bridge — this time a limp 1-0 loss — only added to the frustration. But it wasn’t just the result doing the rounds.
During the match, cameras caught Ange Postecoglou cupping his ears towards the Spurs away end, a moment that seemed to be in direct response to fans booing his decision to take off Lucas Bergvall for Pape Matar Sarr — a switch that briefly looked inspired when Sarr found the net, only for VAR to intervene.
Ange Postecoglou accused of arrogance by Jamie O’Hara over Spurs fan gesture
Jamie O’Hara hasn’t held back. The former Tottenham midfielder has called out Ange Postecoglou’s gesture, describing it as nothing short of “arrogance”.
Speaking to Grosvenor Sport, O’Hara said: “Ange Postecoglou is really struggling, I get the fact that he’s frustrated but you can’t be cupping your ear to the fans – to make it worse it got chalked off! You can’t be doing that as the manager.
“The fans will be frustrated, Lucas Bergvall has been a good player for Tottenham and Pape Sarr hasn’t had the greatest season, but he brings energy. It’s a like-for-like swap but he can’t win, whatever change he makes I think they’ll boo him. Bergvall has been a shining light, but you can’t do that to the fans.
“Whether you think they’re wrong or not, they’re paying money, they’re travelling all over the country to support you. You’ve lost 16 games this season, you cannot have the arrogance to stand there and do that over your subs being booed. He can’t get away with it.
“Everyone in London wants to beat Tottenham, they’re Arsenal’s and Chelsea’s cup final. There is an agenda against them, the ‘Spursy’ way but they are the only ones that can change it! Accept it, deal with it and change the narrative, that’s what Ange Postecoglou was supposed to do.
“Install a DNA into the football club and start winning. He can’t say that there is an agenda against the football club and himself when you’ve lost 16 games in a season. 48 years ago, was the last time that happened, he isn’t being backed into a corner, he just hasn’t been good enough.
“He was supposed to come in and make a difference and he hasn’t, simple as.”
Postecoglou on course to become worst manager in recent Tottenham history
Jamie O’Hara is spot on. Since he walked through the doors at Hotspur Way, Ange Postecoglou has talked a lot about resilience and tough spells shaping a team, but you look at him now and he’s the one losing his composure.
He’s piling up the wrong kind of records — from current league position to games lost, Postecoglou is quickly working his way into the conversation for one of Tottenham’s worst managers in recent memory.
The fact that he’s still in charge is baffling. Nothing he’s done so far justifies this level of backing or patience from Tottenham’s hierarchy.
