This Motivated Red Sox To Push Through With Garrett Crochet Extension

Garrett Crochet is here to stay in Boston after the Red Sox announced a six-year extension with the left-hander, reportedly worth $175 million.

Crochet went five innings with two earned runs allowed in his Opening Day start against the Texas Rangers, but the Red Sox saw all spring training long what made Crochet special. They recognized urgency to secure the elite starter before free agency and Craig Breslow shared the organization’s mindset in finalizing a deal days into the 2025 season for the Red Sox.

“Obviously when we acquired Garrett, we did so with the idea that the team and the rotation could benefit from someone who could pitch at the top and anchor the rotation,” Breslow told NESN’s Tom Caron and The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier on the “310 To Left” podcast. “Obviously, he’s a guy that had a great year last year as a starting pitcher. More than some of the obvious stuff was just how much swing-and-miss he was able to generate and the consistency of stuff throughout the season.

At 25 years old, we feel like his prime is still in front of him. He was someone who we were very interested in securing and making a long-term commitment to. These conversations have gone on for months now. There were times where we felt like we were really close and there were times we felt like we were miles apart.”

Crochet now leads the rotation with his security taken care of as the Red Sox look to flip the script on a 1-4 start to the season.
