Tottenham’s top manager target told he has not done enough to deserve the job

0 3

With speculation swirling over Ange Postecoglou’s future, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has emerged as a potential replacement – but one ex-Premier League manager is not convinced he is the right man for Tottenham.

Tottenham’s struggles this season have been glaring, with 15 league defeats raising serious questions over Postecoglou’s long-term viability.

Yet, despite their league woes, Spurs remain in the Europa League, a competition that could prove to be his saving grace.

Postecoglou’s fate at the club likely hinges on how far they progress in Europe, with success potentially buying him more time.

Regardless, the club have already begun identifying contingency plans, with Iraola reportedly high on Tottenham’s shortlist.

The Spanish coach has done an impressive job with Bournemouth, guiding them to 10th place and sitting 10 points ahead of Tottenham, a remarkable achievement considering the resources at his disposal.

Alan Pardew’s warning to Andoni Iraola over Tottenham job

Should Spurs decide to part ways with Postecoglou, Iraola is said to be Daniel Levy’s preferred choice.

However, former Spurs boss Alan Pardew has issued a stark warning to the Bournemouth manager, suggesting the move might not be as straightforward as it seems.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Pardew shared his thoughts: “His flag’s still high up the pole. He strikes me as a good manager, a competent manager.

“If Spurs come calling and I was him, I would jump at the chance, I’m afraid. Big club, and you have to understand where a manager’s head is, particularly when you’re doing well.

“You can kind of take on anything. You feel like, ‘I’ll change that situation. Ok, Spurs, there’s a lot of managers who have fallen down there, but I’ll be the one that can do it.’ That’s your mindset.

“Because sometimes supporters look at it and go, ‘Why would you leave Bournemouth? You’ve got a great team, you could probably be there for another two, three, four years. Spurs would be a gamble.’

“But actually, in your mind, you’re not thinking like that. You’re thinking, ‘I’m going to go to Spurs, turn that around and win them a cup.'”

‘Not done enough’ – Pardew questions Iraola’s credentials

Despite his praise, Pardew was quick to cast doubt on whether Iraola has done enough to earn a move to a club of Tottenham Hotspur’s stature, drawing comparisons to former Wolves manager Gary O’Neil.

He continued: “I don’t think he’s done enough, by the way, personally, to warrant a move to Spurs.

“Just to clarify that, remember last year we were sitting here, it might have been two years or 18 months ago, talking about Gary O’Neil.

“I saw Gary yesterday. Gary’s out of work. We were practising our putting because we’re both out of work. Well, the bottom line of what I’m saying is, sometimes you are flying high and you get linked.

“You’re this and you’re that. You’re the next up-and-coming thing, and it can change quite quickly.”

Pardew elaborated further: “I think England was potential for O’Neil, but Gary’s a great manager, and he’ll get back in soon, there’s no doubt about that.

“But I’m just trying to say to you about where your flag is as a manager. It can be halfway down the mast. If it’s at the top of the mast, that’s when the move might happen.”
